celebrant success: having a beautiful office
Most celebrants work from home, which has many wonderful advantages. Apart from the obvious cost advantage, a home office provides a relaxed and flexible working environment. However, when choosing a work space keep the following points in mind:
- Create an 'office' that will be quiet and out of the flow of home traffic. This is especially important if you have children and it’s school holiday time.
- Set boundaries for other members of the household so they know when you can or cannot be disturbed. (A Do Not Disturb sign might be useful).
- If possible, dedicate your office space for office use only. Try to avoid having the room used for guest accommodation or other tasks.
- Bright, soft lighting will make your workplace more appealing and easy on your eyes. Have as much natural light as possible, either from windows or skylights.
- Set up your office equipment so that it is ergonomically sound. If using a computer, the top of your screen should be at eye level. When seated your feet should be flat on the floor. If you use the telephone a lot, use a headset and microphone.
- Create an efficient means for storing files, certificates, forms, etc.
- Have inspiring paintings, or montages of wedding photos and testimonials on your walls. Update this display as you go. This is not only for your benefit but also for clients who visit you.
- Keep your office clean, uncluttered and comfortable.
- Get a separate telephone number for your business and make sure children living in the house know not to answer it when it rings. In most cases you can get an extra number without having an extra line installed. An answerphone gives you more freedom also.
- Approach your 'business' area as if you are a client. Walk in from the driveway, through the front door to the meeting area. What do you see? How would you view it from the client's perspective? What changes do you think could improve this perception?
- Make your office an inspiring, comfortable and welcoming space to be.
