In most countries a notice of some sort is required. There are differing time frames and requirements. In Australia, the celebrant will take care of all the legal requirements including the lodgement of the notice of intent to marry form (which some people call the 'license') This must be lodged a month and a day before your wedding and is valid for eighteen months from the date of lodgement.
